Black and White Photography | Joseph Pessar

Documentary, Editorial, and Film-Inspired Black and White Photography

Black and white photography has always been a central part of the way I see and photograph people. Long before digital photography, I spent years working with black and white film in the darkroom, hand processing negatives and making prints manually. That experience still shapes the way I approach light, contrast, emotion, and tonality today.

For me, black and white photography has never been about removing color simply for style. The strongest monochrome images simplify a moment down to expression, atmosphere, movement, and light in a way that often feels more honest and timeless. Across weddings, portraits, and documentary work, black and white continues to be one of the most important parts of my visual approach as a photographer.
