Norwegian Elopement Photographer in New York City
For years, I photographed Norwegian couples traveling to New York City to get married through the Norwegian Seamen’s Church in Manhattan. What started as individual weddings eventually became one of the most unique and rewarding parts of my photography career, combining my connection to New York with the experience of guiding Norwegian couples through the city on one of the biggest days of their lives.
These weddings were rarely about large productions or complicated timelines. Most couples came to New York looking for something more personal, spontaneous, and experience-driven. After the ceremony, we would spend hours walking and driving through the city together, creating portraits naturally throughout places like Greenwich Village, the Lower East Side, Brooklyn Bridge, Central Park, the Meatpacking District, and Brooklyn itself.
One of my favorite parts of these weddings was how differently couples experienced New York once they slowed down and moved through it together. On some days we rented an old checkered New York taxi that became part of the experience itself, not just transportation between locations. The city constantly shifted around us while the photography stayed focused on atmosphere, movement, emotion, and the feeling of actually being there together in that moment.
Looking back, these Norwegian elopements in New York helped shape much of the documentary and editorial approach that still defines my photography today. They were never only about taking pictures in famous locations. They were about creating an unforgettable experience inside one of the most visually iconic cities in the world.
